Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a Life Simulation game for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console, and the latest entry in a franchise that started on the N64 (Japan-only) in 2001. New Leaf was first announced at E3 2010, and further information was revealed at E3 2011. Many new innovations have been added to the latest installment, centered chiefly around the big hook that players now become mayor of their town and are largely responsible for the well-being of the town and the happiness of its residents.Animal Crossing: New Leaf was released in the U.S. on June 9th, 2013. Players who opted for the eShop version were able to begin downloading the game at midnight EST. New Leaf was previously released in Japan on November8th, 2012, where it was met with immediate critical and commercial success. Within the first week, the game sold nearly 800,000 units in Japan (quadruple what The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sold in the same time frame.) Famitsu, the largest gaming publication in Japan, awarded the game a near-perfect 39/40 score.
